A Successful Planting day for 2024

Heroes of the planting day

Donating native plants local to the area and planting them out in the area under restoration at the end of Kuratawhiti Street is gradually creating an area of natural beauty, flora and fauna that will benefit generations to come and help provide a wildlife corridor along our river. This will bring native species to our neighbourhoods and gardens and enrich the lives of the community as well as rebuilding the mauri of the mighty Waiōhine river. A place to walk, photograph, picnic and generally enjoy the outdoors but not to be underestimated for it’s benefit to visitors and tourists, especially as attractions such as the cycle trail develop and boost our local economy.
Every tree will become an ecosystem providing shade, moisture, food and homes for native wildlife and help fight the effects of climate change.

PLANTING DAY 2024 is here!

Each year our community planting develops and soon will start to join up into a mosaic of naturalistic ecosystem and recreational community area.
We’ll have the plan we’ve drawn up that we’re looking for you to have your say on.

Planting Day this year is Sunday June 23rd from 09:00.  Come along and plant something, a lot of the preparation is done for you, so it’s not heavy work.

We'll be adding a new bed to the Kuratawhiti Street plot just opposite the Wire Shed.

Please let friends and families know.
We love getting photos taken on the day.

If you have plants but can't make it on the day, let Tony Waters know: tony.waters1@googlemail.com or ‘phone 022 190 2487. 022 190 2487 and we'll try to pick them up.

more than a catchment community

When two hundred ratepayers, mana whenua, citizens of the Waiohine valley community came together to form the Waiohine Action Group. They chose a team of local cultural, technical and specialist experts and enthusiasts to work for them, to create the first ever living, whole of river plan, with all that entails - in keeping with the vision of the community and the principles of Te Mana O Te Wai.

The Waiōhine River is an extremely beautiful, extremely complicated river. It has taken four years of hard work to understand how each aspect of the river infleunces the others and to find the best expertise to help develop the best solutions.

Surprisingly, this approach has resulted in an integrated plan that costs a small fraction of the old, abandoned plan to implement and maintain.

Maybe that’s because we all worked together and tried to walk a mile in each other’s shoes.
